Karl Murphy —
Karl Murphy is an Irish multi-disciplinary artist based in London, working across sculpture, poetry, painting, and digital formats. Exploring the Anthropocene, Murphy views the poetic as a form of magic, using language to transform and shift perceptions of reality.
At the centre of Murphy's practice is the audience and their engagement with ideas. As Learning Officer at Saatchi Gallery, Murphy designs workshops that activate the concepts behind artworks, encouraging participants to connect deeply and find their own voices. These sessions move beyond traditional, reflective approaches, creating inclusive spaces that make art accessible and relevant to all.
Many of Murphy's works feature speaking sculptures, where voices emanate from the artwork itself. These sound sculptures invite audiences to engage with the work in new and dynamic ways, encouraging dialogue and interaction. Murphy often incorporates found materials, such as branches and decayed trees, into these pieces, giving life to overlooked natural elements and highlighting humanity's complex relationship with nature.
Drawing on folklore and land-based stories, Murphy advocates for reverence over utility in our connection to the earth. Inspired by philosopher John Moriarty’s question, “What are poets for in a destitute time?” Murphy’s practice offers a poetic response, reimagining the role of art, language, and pedagogy in a rapidly changing world.
